Police seize AK-47 at Alice Griffith complex

A convicted felon was arrested on suspicion of possession of an AK-47 assault rifle and related child endangerment at the Alice Griffith public housing complex in San Francisco’s Bayview District Tuesday morning, a police spokeswoman said today.

The San Francisco Police Department served a search warrant at a home on Cameron Way near Nichols Way at about 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, following a brief surveillance period, according to San Francisco police Officer Grace Gatpandan.

The occupants of the home were all detained while officers searched the residence, she said. Police located an AK-47 assault rifle in the home and determined that the gun belonged to 52-year-old San Francisco resident Randall Bass, Gatpandan said.

Bass was placed under arrest at about 10 a.m. and booked into the Bayview District police station on suspicion of numerous assault weapon violations and child endangerment, she said. No other suspects were detained as a result of the search.

According to Gatpandan, Bass is a convicted felon and therefore prohibited from possessing any firearms. The AK-47 was also determined to be an unregistered short-barreled rifle, which is illegal.

Gatpandan said Bass was additionally arrested for child endangerment because he had an illegal, unsecured weapon in a residence with children. Bass also has a warrant for about $1,700 in unpaid traffic tickets, she said.
