Even in the midst of a historically-futile season, the Oakland Raiders reached a new low Sunday.
Oakland, now 1-11, fell to the St. Louis Rams 52-0 in their worst loss since 1961 when they lost to Houston 55-0. They failed in every phase.
The Raiders defense allowed 172 rushing yards — 117 to Tre Mason who also scored three touchdowns — while surrendering 183 yards through the air.
Rookie quarterback Derek Carr was unable to keep up, completing 24 of 39 pass attempts for 173 yards, two interceptions no touchdowns. Oakland failed to get anything going on the ground as well, rushing 21 times for 61 yards, averaging 2.9 yards per attempt.
Carr, on the overall performance, said:
“That wasn’t us. I don’t know what that was.”
Sunday was Oakland’s worst showing of the season and ranks among their worst defeat of the last few seasons. Tony Sparano was embarrassed:
“We’ve all got to take responsibility. It starts with me. Embarrassing. … I didn’t think we tackled well. To be honest with you, fundamentally, we weren’t good.”
The offensive line allowed six sacks, with St. Louis also notching seven tackles for a loss. Meanwhile, the Raiders’ pass rush failed to get to Rams quarterback Shaun Hill at all except for a single Justin Tuck sack. Tuck also batted a pass.
Charles Woodson owned his part, which included a missed tackle on an 89-yard run by Mason:
“I’m disappointed in what I displayed out there. I just didn’t have it, for whatever reason.”
The gateway to the west may have solidified Oakland with the first overall selection in the 2015 draft, after the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the New York Giants by one point Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders are now the only one-win team in the league.
Oakland will seek redemption as they host the 49ers in a Bay Bridge game next Sunday.
