A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer suffered major injuries Thursday evening in Sunnyvale after a vehicle ran a red light and struck him.
Two CHP officers were exiting northbound U.S. Highway 101 to southbound Lawrence Expressway around 9:30 p.m. when the collision occurred, according to Officer Jared Diaz.
As they were leaving the ramp, one of the officers was struck by a vehicle traveling north on Lawrence Expressway, Diaz said. The injured officer, who is expected to survive, was taken to a hospital with major non-life threatening injuries.
The motorist involved in the collision is suspected of driving through a red light prior to the collision, but the CHP has determined that it was an accident, Diaz said.
The driver, who was not found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, was cited on suspicion of running a red light, Diaz said.
