With three rings, Flannery sends himself home

Giants third base coach Tim Flannery announced Tuesday he’s stepped down.

Flannery, 57, joined the Giants in 2007 and was with the club for all three West Coast world championships.

The Giants released a statement Tuesday:

“Tim Flannery informed us earlier today that he has chosen to step down as the Giants third base coach and it is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Tim. We are grateful for his many contributions to the Giants organization over the last eight seasons.”

Flannery has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Bryan Stow, the Giants fan injured in a 2011 beating outside Dodger Stadium.

A longtime musician, Flannery plans to expand fundraising in a project called Love Harder that will include performances in the Bay Area in January.

33 years as a player and coach have taken a toll. Flannery has undergone multiple surgeries including his knee last year.

Manager Bruce Bochy played five seasons with Flannery for the San Diego Padres. The two coached together for seven seasons in San Diego following their playing careers. They reunited for this final run in San Francisco in 2007.

Flannery has released nine albums as a musician and currently plays in a band with his wife Donna.

He left a message about his departure through his band’s Facebook page Tim Flannery and Lunatic Fringe:

“With a heavy heart I want to say something. I left everything 9 years ago to chase a dream, I left my home, my family, to follow my leader, and friend Bruce Bochy, to fight another battle, to try and bring a World Championship to San Francisco. … I feel like the game has honored a humble servant of it, I have been blessed so much from this sacred game. I just now feel it is the time to send myself home safely.”
