Man in 60s shot dead in Oakland hills

A man was fatally shot at an Oakland park Tuesday afternoon, according to the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department.

Police received a report from a witness, who heard gunshots fired around 3:45 p.m. in the area of the Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve, park district police Lt. Gretchen Rose said.

The park is on Skyline Boulevard, just south of Elverton Drive, in the Oakland hills. The witness then found a man in his early 60s suffering from gunshot wounds, Rose said. Oakland police and park district officers responded to the scene and found the man lying down on a trail, she said.

Paramedics also responded to the trail and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to Rose. No other victims were found in the area, she said.

Police contacted area witnesses who heard gunshots in the area at around the same time, Rose said. There were no people or vehicles seen leaving the park, police said.

Officers recovered spent shell casings near where the man was found, according to Rose. The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his family, police said.
