Pedestrian fatally struck by three cars

A woman killed in the roadway this evening of Interstate Highway 580 in the unincorporated area of Castro Valley was a pedestrian, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer Eric Thomas said officers responded to a report of a collision at 5:27 a.m. on I-580 west of Interstate Highway 237 in Castro Valley.

A woman was walking or standing on the freeway when three vehicles struck her, Thomas said.

“We don’t know if she actually walked onto the freeway, but that’s when she was noticed by the drivers,” Thomas said.

The three involved drivers are cooperating with CHP while the investigation continues, Thomas said.

He said drugs and alcohol were likely not a factor in the collision.

Thomas said at this time, it’s unclear whether the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The collision blocked traffic on all westbound lanes of I-580 and caused significant traffic delays.

CHP officials issued a sig-alert at 5:41 p.m. and cleared it at 8:22 p.m.
