Free agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval has received a five-year, $95 million offer from the Boston Red Sox.
Day 19 of Panda Watch is upon us and Pablo Sandoval has an offer from the Boston Red Sox.
The offer is five years, $95 million, according to a report from Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo. Assuming the contract isn’t front or back loaded, that would breakdown to $19 million per season.
Now the ball is in the Giants’ court.
Earlier this year, the Giants offered Sandoval a three-year, $40 million contract that was turned down by his camp. That would translate to about $67 million over five years, which is way below the alleged offer from Boston.
Sandoval is coming off a three-year, $17.2 million contract.
He’s seeking a deal in the five-year, $80 to $90 million range, which the Giants have made an offer close to.
Sandoval also rejected a $15.3 million qualifying offer. That means if Sandoval signed with another team, the Giants would be awarded with a compensatory draft pick from whichever team signs him at the end of the first round in next year’s draft.
Assistant general manager Bobby Evans told KNBR 680-AM Thursday he still likes the Giants’ chances:
“We’re well in this thing. I think there’s a strong desire to come back, but I think he has to be comfortable with what his other options are before he can define that for us.”
The Giants are on the books for $127.3 million worth of salaries in 2015. As of now, that’s the fifth highest payroll in baseball.
The San Diego Padres are in the hunt for Sandoval as well. They made an offer Friday, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. No numbers on that offer have been reported.
