Hazmat teams are cleaning an oil spill after a tractor-trailer slid off Interstate Highway 680 during heavy rains this morning in Sunol, an unincorporated area of Alameda County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers responded to the northbound lanes of I-680 past the Pleasanton-Sunol Road off-ramp in Sunol at 9:02 a.m., said CHP Officer Eric Anderson.
Anderson said the driver of the vehicle lost control of the tractor-trailer during heavy rains and the vehicle slid off the roadway down a 100-foot embankment.
The tractor-trailer jackknifed across a cement culvert at the base of the embankment and ruptured both of the vehicle’s fuel tanks, Anderson said.
An estimated 125 gallons of diesel fuel leaked out of the tanks and into a natural dike, where it was contained.
As rain continued to fall and collect in the culvert, the rain and gasoline breached the dike, overflowed and reached the drains leading to Alameda Creek, Anderson said.
The driver was not injured in the accident, and Anderson said hazmat crews were cleaning the spill this evening. One lane remains closed and traffic is severely delayed, Anderson said.
