Shipping containers plunge into water

United States Coast Guard crews out of San Francisco helped recover shipping containers that fell into the Oakland Estuary Saturday.

Coast Guard officials said crews and local fire department personnel responded around 8:30 p.m. to the estuary after the three containers fell in the water from the motor vessel NYK Aquarius while offloading cargo at SSA Facility Berth 57 in the water.

Two Coast Guard response boat crews responded to maintain a 500-yard safety zone with Alameda and Oakland firefighters until the containers were safely removed.

Officials said a tugboat also responded and was able to push all three containers to the dock to be picked up by a crane. The containers did not contain any hazardous material, and there were no injuries reported.

The Coast Guard is assisting with an investigation into the incident.
