Victims of an early morning break-in and aborted burglary in Milpitas on Friday confronted and chased the suspect who was captured by a police sergeant conducting an unrelated traffic stop, police said.
At around 1 a.m. Friday, a man scaled a wall to the second floor balcony of a residence of a housing complex in the 1700 block of South Main Street in Milpitas and entered through an unlocked screen door, police Lt. Raj Maharaj said.
When he got inside, residents of the unit confronted and chased him out the front door before anything was stolen, according to Maharaj.
At about 1:04 a.m., a police sergeant, who is also the supervisor of Milpitas police’s SWAT unit, was performing a traffic stop when he heard someone yelling that their home had been burglarized, police said.
The sergeant then noticed two people running southbound on South Main Street and realized that one of the burglary victims was chasing the suspect, Maharaj said.
He joined the foot pursuit and chased the suspect to the parking lot of a nearby business in the 30 block of Ede Lane about two blocks north of Montague Expressway where he captured him without incident, according to police.
The suspect, Norman DeCampo Desumala, 33, of Fremont, was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of residential burglary, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, Maharaj said.
The victims inside the residence during the burglary included a 44-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, according to police.
