There were no survivors in a plane crash discovered this morning in a rural area off of state Highway 152 east of Gilroy, a Santa Clara County sheriff’s spokesman said.
Deputies responded to a call around 10 a.m. from a rancher who reported the crash near Highway 152 and Canada Road, Santa Clara County sheriff’s Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said.
The crash happened Saturday evening when a Cessna 140 went down 4 miles north-northwest of Hollister, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said.
Two people were inside the plane that was flying from Hollister to Watsonville, according to Kenitzer. In an email, he said:
“The aircraft sustained substantial damage.”
No one on the ground was injured, according to Stenderup.
Deputies are waiting this afternoon for officials from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board to arrive to the scene and investigate the crash, Stenderup said.
