Twitter helps locate missing woman

Police said social media played a role today in locating a mentally handicapped woman who was reported missing on Friday night.

Lt. Randall Brandt said police issue a missing person alert on the department’s Twitter feed.

The television news station KTVU re-tweeted the post and one of their follows saw the woman on the street and reported it to police, Brandt said.

Police found Yolanda Carroll, 53, in Fremont and reunited her with her family Saturday afternoon, police said. According to Brandt:

“She’s fine and she’s with her family.”

Carroll reportedly walked away from a family member at the San Leandro Marina around 10 p.m. on Friday, Brandt said.

Her family members said she has the mental capacity of a younger teenager and is not familiar with public transportation, according to police.

Police said the reunion was the “perfect example” of how police and the public can work together.
