Muni buses shut down after World Series

All bus service has been suspended in San Francisco this evening due to safety concerns caused by riotous World Series celebrations throughout The City, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority.

Muni metro service will continue both in the subway and on the surface, as will all shuttle buses supporting metro service, Muni officials said.

City streets in areas including Market Street and the Mission District have been taken over by large crowds celebrating the San Francisco Giants’ World Series victory against the Kansas City Royals.

Police have reported a number of bonfires and firecrackers and large crowds have been seen climbing on top of buses in some areas. Police have been seen out in riot gear in the Mission District and on Market Street, and there have been reports of bottles being thrown at officers as well as vandalism.

One person was shot in the arm at 21st and Valencia streets and is expected to recover from his injury, according to police spokesman Gordon Shyy. The suspect is at large and there is no description at this time, Shyy said. Some arrests have been made but police have not released numbers.
