Amtrak train kills person walking on tracks

A person walking on train tracks in Oakland was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Wednesday morning, an Amtrak spokeswoman said.

The train was headed from Sacramento to its final destination at the Oakland Coliseum station when it hit the person walking near 37th Avenue at about 8:30 a.m., Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.

None of the crew or the eight passengers on board the train were injured, Graham said. Only one track is open at the scene and trains moving through the area are doing so at restricted speeds, causing delays.

Passengers on board the involved train were provided alternate transportation. The train was taken out of service and will head to a railyard for cleaning before returning to Sacramento.

Delays are expected to continue into the afternoon, Graham said.
