Water main break affects General Hospital

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission responded to a broken water main near San Francisco General Hospital Tuesday morning, a spokesman said.

The 107-year-old 12-inch water line broke open at the intersection of 22nd Street and Vermont Street around 3 a.m. this morning, according to SFPUC spokesman Tyrone Jue.

Water was choked off from the pipe at 3:30 a.m., shortly before SFPUC workers began teaming up with hospital engineers to restore water pressure to certain departments of San Francisco General Hospital, Jue said.

Minor flooding has caused some traffic delays in the area, leading SFPUC to advise motorists to avoid the intersection until repairs are completed in about six hours. No other property damage was recorded during the break, which occurred due to the old age of the pipe itself, according to Jue.
