Rescued dogs named for Giants stars

If you’re a Giants-loving dog fan, you’ll likely find an offer from the SPCA for Monterey County hard to resist — but you’d better move fast.

Fourteen dogs and puppies saved from a horrible life crammed inside a small car have been put up for adoption, with 13 of them named after San Francisco Giants players and one after sideline reporter Amy G.

The dogs — four adults and ten puppies, Pomeranians and Jack Russell Terriers — were rescued after being found in a car parked near Monterey’s Laguna Grande Regional Park in late April.

SPCA for Monterey County spokesperson Beth Brookhouser told SFBay the dogs were found living in deplorable conditions:

 “Stacked in seven, tiny, filthy crates in a cluttered older model Subaru.  It was was awful, it was disgusting.”

Brookhouser says the dogs were kept as many as four to a crate, with the crates averaging only 20 inches long, by 13 inches wide by 11 inches tall in size:

 “The crates were so small that many of the tiny dogs were unable to stand up straight.”

After being treated by SPCA veterinarians and given “lots of TLC” from staff members, the dogs have been nursed back to health.

And here’s the part Giants fans might find irresistible. SPCA officials have named the dogs Panda, Posey, Pence, Crawford, Brandon, Madison, Romo, Hudson, Vogelsong, Morse, Peavy, Jeremy, Bochy and Amy G.

Since they were put up for adoption last week eight of the rescued dogs — Bochy, Amy G, Crawford, Madison, Morse, Pence, Posey, and Vogelsong — have been adopted.

The rest — Brandon (Belt), Ishikawa, Jeremy, Panda, Peavy, Romo, and Hudson — as of late Monday, are still available.

Ishikawa is actually a 15th dog from another rescue that was added to the group after last week’s dramatic walk off home run by his namesake, Travis Ishikawa, sent the Giants to the World Series.

Brookhouser said:

“We’re thrilled that Bochy, Amy G, Crawford, Madison, Morse, Pense, Posey, and Vogelsong will get to watch Game 1 snuggled in the arms of their adopters, and hope that the remaining seven will be adopted very soon.”

As for the person accused of keeping the dogs confined to the car — Betty Bustamante — officials say after being charged with animal neglect, she failed to show up for a court appearance for the third time last week.  A warrant has been issued for her arrest.

The rescue of the “Giants” dogs in April is one of several rescues the Monterey SPCA has undertaken in the last year.

Earlier this month animal welfare workers saved seven sick cats and kittens living in what was described as a “repulsive house” in Prunedale.

Also, in July the SPCA rescued 83 pets that were found in a house in Greenfield that officials said was “filled with feces, urine.”  Since that rescue, four puppies have been born to their rescued mothers.

And in May, 18 dogs and dogs and two cars were rescued from a home in Pacific Grove that officials said was so filthy that officials said the home was later declared uninhabitable.
