San Jose police received reports of a single vehicle collision in the area of Blossom Hill Road and Waltrip Lane at 11:38 p.m., according to Officer Albert Morales.
Responding officers found a vehicle smashed against a cement sign with a man and woman both trapped inside, Morales said.
Fire crews and paramedics responded to the scene, removing the woman from the car and transporting her to a local hospital for treatment, according to Morales.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Morales said.
The cause of the collision is still being determined, and it is uncertain whether or not drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision.
