Toddler on life support after drowning

A 2-year-old girl from San Leandro is on life support after she drowned in a swimming pool late this morning while visiting relatives in Vallejo, police said.

Vallejo police officers and firefighters responded to a report of a drowning in the area of the 800 block of Tobin Drive shortly before 11:30 a.m., police said.

The girl was found unconscious and not breathing in the backyard swimming pool at a home, according to police.

The child’s parents were inside the home with other family members when the drowning occurred, police said.

It appears the girl walked to the backyard and fell into the pool by accident, according to police.

The girl was initially taken to Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center before she was transported to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland where she is on life support, police said.

Anyone with information on the drowning is asked to contact Vallejo police detectives Fabio Rodriguez or Raul Munoz by calling (707) 651-7147.

  • Since drowning means death by water inhalation, why is she on life support? And if she’s not dead, why does the story say she drowned?
