High tides prompt beach advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazard Statement in effect for some coastal areas in the Bay Area due to high surf and strong rip currents.

Officials said buoys along the coast from Sonoma County to Monterey County Saturday night were reporting 7-foot to 8-foot swells.

The swells could continue to build throughout the day and reach as high as 12 feet tonight.

The large waves could increase the risk of rip currents.
