One of the victims managed to climb onto some rocks far from shore while the second man remained unaccounted for.
A boat crew rescued the man stranded on the rocks and brought him to shore, where he was shaken up but in good condition, U.S. Coast Guard Command Duty Officer Joe Ford said.
A Coast Guard helicopter crew located the second man, who was unresponsive but had a pulse.
Emergency responders performed CPR on the man but he died after he was returned to shore, Ford said.
He said he did not know where the man was from nor his age.
A Mandarin interpreter was summoned to translate for the surviving victim, Ford said.
The officer said high surf warnings are in effect at numerous Bay Area beaches this weekend from the North Bay to the Monterey Bay area:
“There are some sneaker waves rolling in and catching people off guard.”
Beachgoers throughout the Bay Area are advised to take caution throughout today and tonight as large surf and strong rip currents are expected to continue, according to the National Weather Service.
