Police responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Hyde and Fulton streets at about 2:50 a.m., police said.
A suspect in his early 20s confronted a group of men and demanded money.
He shot the victim in the stomach before taking cash from the group and fleeing, police said.
The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
