After an 8-28 record as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Dennis Allen was fired Monday.
First came back-to-back 4-12 seasons. Then, Oakland’s 0-4 record in what was supposed to be a year of major progress.
In a yet another failed effort from a head coach, the Raiders fired Dennis Allen from his coaching role Monday evening, according to multiple media reports.
Multiple attempts via text and phone by SFBay to confirm Allen’s dismissal with Raiders media staff were not returned.
Allen’s job has been in jeopardy since the end of the 2013 season, and owner Mark Davis has been clear that he wanted to see progress.
A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in which the team is expected to announce Allen’s successor.
The two most obvious choices to replace Allen are offensive coordinator Greg Olson and offensive line coach Tony Sparano.
Sparano is the only member of the Raiders coaching staff with head coaching experience, though his stint in that capacity with the Miami Dolphins wasn’t exactly spectacular.
There are other options, though it’s unlikely a hiring will be made before Tuesday morning.
One of the key elements in the decision is who would replace a Raiders coordinator if that position is vacated. Olson would be tougher to replace, in theory, since finding a new offensive coordinator mid-season is daunting, to say the least.
Replacing Sparano’s post as offensive line coach, though, is much simpler.
