Around midnight, police were asking people to avoid the area of Geary Boulevard and Clement Street due to the incident and heavy police presence.
The incident was concluded around 1 a.m. Police said the man was pulled over for suspicion of DUI when he threatened to kill himself.
Police said the man was armed with a knife and cut himself.
Responding officers used flash bang grenades to subdue the suspect.
He was detained and transported to the hospital.
