AT&T PARK — Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner was selected as the 2014 “Willie Mac” Award winner prior to Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres.
A humble Bumgarner delivered a message to McCovey — who is hospitalized with infections in both legs — during his acceptance speech:
“Willie if you’re watching, I wish you a speedy recovery and we all look forward to seeing you at the ballpark soon.”
The overpowering lefty has notched a 18-10 record with a 2.98 ERA (72 ER, 217-1/3 IP) and 219 strikeouts in 33 starts this season.
He also leads all pitchers in batting average (.262), runs scored (10), hits (17), home runs (4), RBIs (15) and slugging percentage (.477).
Of his two home runs, two are grand slams. He is the second pitcher in major league history to hit two in one season.
He also became part of the first ever battery tandem to hit grand slams in a single game with Buster Posey on July 13.
Bumgarner is now the fifth player currently on the Giants roster to win the award.
The Willie McCovey Award is given to the team’s “most inspirational player” as voted by players coaches, training staff and fans.
Past recipients include Hunter Pence (2013), Posey (2012), Ryan Vogelsong (2011) and Matt Cain (2009).
