Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a coastal incident along the waters by state Highway 1 and Granite Creek shortly before 9 a.m., sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Irons said.
Two people were fishing and one of them fell in the water, he said. The other person dove into the water in an attempt to save the drowned person without success, according to Irons.
Emergency crews removed the victim out of the water and attempted to resuscitate the person, Irons said. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Irons. The survivor was able to get out of the water, he said.
The Monterey County coroner’s office has not released the deceased person’s identity. Units from Cal Fire, Mid-Coast Fire Brigade, State Park lifeguards and Carmel Highlands Fire Protection District also responded to the incident.
