Mexico draws Chile in scoreless Levi’s friendly

A packed Levi’s Stadium sellout crowd of 67,175 cheered on Mexico and Chile internationals to a 0-0 friendly draw Saturday night.

In their first matches on the world stage since June’s World Cup in Brazil, Mexico and Chile delivered as lively a scoreless draw — with only a single shot on goal between them — as they could, with exciting runs and scoring chances not reflected on the score sheet.

Looking fast and active, Giovani Dos Santos threatened the Chilean defense all night. The Villareal midfielder’s best scoring chance came in the 65th minute, when he air mailed a breakaway chance over the goal of keeper Claudio Bravo.

FC Barcelona’s Alexis Sánchez showed his precision around the goal for Chile, including a 17th minute floater from just outside the box that countryman Arturo Vidal couldn’t quite head home.

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera roamed the sidelines in blazer and tie, gesturing and directing his players in his distinctive if not somewhat subdued style.

The next on-field performance at Levi’s Stadium comes Sunday, Sept. 14 when the San Francisco 49ers host the Chicago Bears for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
