Grenade found by school determined a dud

A grenade removed by San Jose police Tuesday afternoon near Yerba Buena High School was real but its explosive components had been removed, a police spokeswoman said today.

San Jose police bomb tech officers took away the device after officers responded to a report of a suspicious package in the 2000 block of Lucretia Avenue shortly before 3 p.m., Sgt. Heather Randol said.

A person who reported seeing the object told police it looked similar to a grenade, Randol said.

It did turn out to be a real grenade but the explosive parts had been taken out and it was not capable of blowing up, she said.

Residents living nearby were evacuated until the device could be safely removed. Police allowed them to return to their homes Tuesday evening, Randol said.
