A tanker ship disabled by an engine room fire that killed a crewmember earlier this month arrived at the Port of San Francisco this afternoon for repairs and inspections, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
The 485-foot chemical tanker Pine Galaxy was damaged by a fire Aug. 13 in the machinery shop that killed a crewmember and left the ship without power or propulsion, according to the Coast Guard.
It was left stranded about 700 miles west of Cape Blanco, Oregon, while on its way from Los Angeles to South Korea, and the crew radioed for help.
Rescue boats responded and have been towing the ship back to San Francisco for most of the last two weeks, Coast Guard officials said.
Bad weather delayed the journey for a few days this week, but the ship is expected to arrive at the Port of San Francisco at about noon today to dock at a shipyard there for repairs.
It was towed in today by tugboats with the Coast Guard Cutter Pike escorting it for safety.
The Pine Galaxy will remain in San Francisco for repairs and inspection.
The ship was transporting neutral oil, tetramer, propylene tetramer and vegetable oil and there were no reports of leaks or damage to the ship’s tanks, fuel tanks or hull, according to the Coast Guard.
