Hazmat scare forces shelter-in-place, road closure

A hazardous materials incident in Hayward this afternoon has prompted a widespread shelter-in-place order and a road closure off of state Highway 92, city and California Highway Patrol officials said.

The incident was reported at 2:08 p.m. at 3130 Depot Road, according to Alameda County fire officials.

The Hayward Fire Department has ordered residents and businesses within a one-mile radius of the incident to shelter in place, close all doors and windows and turn off all heating and air conditioning units until further notice, city officials said.

CHP officials said northbound Clawiter Road is closed at Highway 92 because of the incident.

The CHP is advising motorists to expect delays in the area and said it will provide an update when the situation is resolved.

3130 Depot Road is the location of the company Contractors Chemical Inc. A phone number listed online for the company is no longer in service.

A spokesman for the Hayward Fire Department, the lead agency handling the incident, wasn’t immediately available to provide more information.
