Crews repair Noe Valley water main

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission crews have restored service to a water main from the 1920s that broke in the city’s Noe Valley neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

The water main break on the 6-inch line was reported around 3:40 p.m. at 28th and Castro streets, SFPUC spokesman Tyrone Jue said.

Crews isolated the leak and water service was rerouted while repairs were made on the line, Jue said The pipe is dated from 1927 and may have ruptured from a combination of old age and Sunday’s 6.0-magnitude earthquake, Jue said. Service was restored as of 10 p.m., according to utility officials.
