Suspected explosives found at Federal Building

Suspected explosives were found and rendered safe outside the Philip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco on Monday night, a police spokesman said Tuesday.

The suspected explosives were found in the 400 block of Golden Gate Avenue just before 8 p.m., San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. A man on the street found the suspected explosives and turned them in to federal police, who are not equipped with a bomb squad, Esparza said.

The San Francisco Police Department’s bomb squad responded and shut down streets in the area. They rendered the suspected explosives safe and reopened the streets by 10 p.m., Esparza said.

Esparza would not reveal what was found by the bomb squad.
