Suspect leads chase with 4-year-old in car

A 20-year-old Marin City man was arrested after he allegedly fled from authorities and crashed into multiple cars and businesses in Sausalito Tuesday morning, a Marin County Sheriff’s lieutenant said.

A deputy saw Derrick McCann, wanted for grand theft from a person and a domestic violence incident from Monday, driving in the 100 block of Drake Avenue around 9 a.m., sheriff’s Lt. Scott Anderson said.

The deputy turned on his emergency lights and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on McCann in the 3000 block of Bridgeway, Anderson said.

McCann did not yield to the deputy and continued driving at speeds of about 60 mph, according to Anderson.

The deputy and a California Highway Patrol officer followed McCann for about a mile. McCann then collided with a Ford Escort stopped on southbound Bridgeway at Spring Street, Anderson said.

The impact of the collision caused the Ford to crash into a signal light and into Hair Solutions salon at 1919 Bridgeway, he said. McCann’s vehicle continued to travel at the intersection and crashed into a Chevrolet minivan parked in front of Fred’s Place, a coffee shop next to the hair salon, at 1917 Bridgeway, according to Anderson.

The Chevrolet moved down multiple parking spots while McCann’s vehicle crashed into the sidewalk and into an outdoor seating area of the coffee shop, Anderson said.

A restaurant patron who was pinned to the building in the crash suffered minor injuries and was able to walk from the scene, he said. McCann allegedly fled on foot but was detained by people at the scene.

McCann, a female passenger and 4-year-old son in his car were transported to Marin General Hospital for minor injuries, according to Anderson.

McCann was arrested and booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of driving without a license, grand theft from a person, battery on a cohabitant, evading a peace officer, cruelty to a child, committing a felony while out on bail, reckless driving and obstructing or delaying a peace officer.
