Two San Jose brothers were inside a small plane that crashed near the Swansboro Country Airport in El Dorado County Saturday evening, killing one brother and injuring the other, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.
The private fixed-wing aircraft crashed just before 7 p.m., sheriff’s officials said. The pilot had apparently made a phone call before or after the crash, and the person they called alerted deputies to it.
The deputies found both brothers at the crash scene. Perry Nieland, 52, was pronounced dead there. His older brother, Richard Nieland, 55, was injured and taken to a hospital. No one else was injured in the crash.
Sheriff’s deputies have not determined who was flying the aircraft, but said that it appears the brothers intended to land at the Swasnboro Country Airport and disappeared after circling.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.
