Fire knocks out power for thousands in Oakland

A fire at a warehouse in East Oakland early Monday morning knocked out power to more than 5,700 PG&E customers in the area, a utility spokeswoman said.

The three-alarm fire was reported around 5 a.m. at a warehouse near San Leandro and Stone streets and spread to other nearby buildings, Oakland fire officials said. The blaze had not been extinguished as of shortly after 7:20 a.m., fire officials said.

The fire also apparently knocked out power to 5,701 PG&E customers, PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris said.

About an hour later, utility crews restored power to more than half of those customers, but 2,679 remained without power as of shortly after 7:20 a.m., Morris said. She did yet not know when power might be restored to the remaining customers.
