A bicyclist who was hit by a man fleeing from police in a stolen van in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood last month succumbed to his injuries at a hospital over the weekend, authorities said Monday.
The bicyclist, identified by the medical examiner’s office as Zachary Watson, 29, died Saturday at San Francisco General Hospital after being struck in the incident on July 28.
Anthony Wisner, 25, is accused of fleeing in a stolen van from a traffic stop at Larkin and Post streets, then crashing into a taxi three blocks away near Post and Jones street, police said.
The impact from the crash sent both vehicles onto the sidewalk, hitting Watson and a pedestrian nearby. Watson was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury while the 60-year-old pedestrian, the taxi driver and a passenger in the cab were also hospitalized, police said.
Wisner took off on foot after the crash and boarded a San Francisco Municipal Railway 38-Geary bus, but was quickly found and arrested. A woman who was in the van with Wisner was trapped after the crash and was also hospitalized. She is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Wisner has been charged with 10 felonies in the case and district attorney’s office spokesman Alex Bastian said today that prosecutors are considering amended charges against him in light of the death of Watson:
“We express our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family. ”
Wisner is next scheduled to appear. in court on Aug. 29.
