Utility crews stopped the leak of a 4-inch natural gas main in Campbell Monday morning that had prompted police to evacuate hundreds of residents near a construction project, a police captain said.
PG&E workers capped the leaking pipe at about 10:30 a.m. at a building site on Hacienda Avenue and police permitted residents back to their apartments and houses in the area, Capt. Gary Berg said.
Police received a report of the gas leak at 8:45 a.m. after construction employees digging in the ground on Hacienda Avenue cut into the pipe, sending flammable natural gas into the air, according to Berg.
The Santa Clara County Fire Department advised police to evacuate nearby residents as a precaution and officers went to apartment buildings and other homes on the north side of Hacienda between Virginia Avenue and Walnut Drive to remove hundreds of people to safety, Berg said.
No one was reported injured in the leak, Berg said.
