Adults, infant fished from flipped kayak

Five adults and an infant were rescued from Southampton Bay near Benicia Sunday evening, a fire official said.

Fire crews responded to a request from the U.S. Coast Guard to assist people in the water off Dillon Point around 6:45 p.m., Benicia Fire Division Chief K.C. Smith said.

One of the six people called for help from a cellphone, he said.

Firefighters en route to the scene learned three people were in the water and three others were on a rubber raft, Smith said.

Fire crews and the Benicia Police Department were called to the scene at the shoreline area of Southampton Bay to find anyone in the water and bring them to shore, he said.

Crew members from the Coast Guard Station Mare Island worked with firefighters to locate the people, according to Smith.

The six people were transported onto a Coast Guard vessel and taken to shore, he said.

The group from San Jose had spent the afternoon fishing off Dillon Point in their rubber raft and kayak, Smith said.

They were equipped with life jackets but windy conditions, strong currents and choppy waters caused the kayak to overturn, he said.

No injuries were reported.
