An 18 wheeler semi-truck collided with a Muni T-Third light rail vehicle in the Bayview this afternoon injuring dozens of passengers.
The San Francisco Police Department said 20 were injured and 11 were transported to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
The collision happened around 1:49 p.m. when a semi-truck traveling northbound on Third Street attempted an illegal left turn onto Innes Street from the third lane of traffic, according to a preliminary investigation by the police department.
The big rig smashed into the Muni train, derailing it off the tracks by several feet.
The police department said the driver of the truck won’t be cited until investigations conclude.
The area along Third Street between Jerrold to Hudson streets will be closed for at least the next hour, according to the police department.
Muni’s Twitter account said the accident cleared at 5:44 p.m. with T-Third resuming service.
Another collision involving Muni and a dump truck happened earlier at 1:30 p.m. near Geary Boulevard and Webster Street.
In this accident, a 38-Geary bus and dump truck collided, injuring 20 and sending 12 to the hospital. Police said the injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
According to police, the dump truck in front of the bus had slammed on its brakes, which caused the bus to slam on its brakes as well.
The bus driver swerved to avoid hitting the dump truck, but rammed a second dump truck traveling westbound on Geary Boulevard.
