First, Los Angeles. Then Dublin or Concord.
But San Antonio?
That’s exactly where the Oakland Raiders have eye-balled recently as a potential new home, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News.
The state of Texas has two football teams already and three NBA teams. The San Antonio Spurs have won five NBA championships in the last 20 years, but still can be overshadowed at times by their rivals in Dallas and Houston.
According to a statement released by Davis and the team, Davis was in Texas to visit Cliff Branch for his induction to a local hall of fame:
“I was in San Antonio to honor Cliff Branch on his induction into the PVILCA. Former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros is a friend, and Henry suggested I take the opportunity to meet with some of the city officials while we were in town. I have nothing further to discuss on the topic.”
The report comes following a series of botched negotiations surrounding the future of the Oakland A’s and local government, and what to do with the Oakland Coliseum.
The A’s want their own place, as do the Raiders. Davis went on the record recently stating that he has $500 million to put towards a new stadium in Oakland. Davis has also stated that his goal is to keep the team in Oakland.
The Oakland Coliseum is a relic among shiny new stadiums built in the last 15 years, and has embarrassingly suffered sewage problems during baseball season.
People familiar with the stadium are split. Some NFL people feel that the stadium is perfect for football, though there’s no denying the A’s could use another ballpark.
If Davis did want to move the team, he’d need to gain two-thirds approval from 24 of the NFL’s 32 owners.
