74-year-old killed walking on I-680

A pedestrian killed late Friday on Interstate Highway 680 in San Jose was 74-year-old Pablo Zaavedra-Perez, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Zaavedra-Perez, of San Jose, was walking in a lane of northbound Highway 680 near Capitol Expressway when a car struck him at about 11:05 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

When officers arrived, they found the victim lying in the No. 4 lane of the highway, CHP officials said.

The driver of a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu who was traveling north in the lane was not able to avoid hitting the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

The CHP reported that the pedestrian had walked onto I-680 from Capitol Expressway, continued south on the off-ramp against traffic and then ended up in the lane where the car struck him.

The driver of the Malibu pulled over after the collision and cooperated fully with officers, Lee said.
