The Giants added some depth to one of their least productive positions Monday, signing former Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla to a minor league contract.
Uggla, 34, was released by the Braves Friday and cleared waivers Monday morning. He hit .162 (21-for-130) with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 48 games for the Braves this season.
The righty slugger batted .179 (80-for-448) with 22 home runs and 55 RBIs in 136 games with Atlanta last year. Uggla is still owed $13 million by the Braves this season. The Braves will shell out another $13 million for Uggla in 2015.
The Giants will only have to pay him the prorated league minimum now that the Braves have released him.
Uggla joins a second base corps comprised of Marco Scutaro, Joe Panik, Ehire Adrianza and Joaquin Arias. Scutaro still holds the starting role, but his health is a question mark.
Uggla is a relatively low-risk acquisition for the Giants considering the plethora of second base options, the fact that he’s not intended to start and how little they have to pay him.
The three-time All-Star will start in Triple-A Fresno. He has an opt-out clause for Aug. 1 if he hasn’t been called up from the minors.
