AT&T PARK — Right-handed pitcher Tyler Beede signed his first major league contract Friday with the Giants.
The 21-year-old from Vanderbilt was the Giants first-round selection in the 2014 draft. He visited AT&T Park for the first time before the team’s series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Manager Bruce Bochy shared his thoughts on Beede before Friday’s game:
“Nice kid, sharp kid, excited to get things going. It’s always good to get a great arm like he has, and it seems like he’s got a great head… We’re excited to have him.”
Bochy said that Beede will travel to the Giants Arizona League team after Sunday’s game to begin his major league career.
Beede finished his junior season at Vanderbilt 8-8 with a 4.05 ERA. He struck out 116 in 113-1/3 innings for the national-champion Commodores.
This followed his stellar 14-1 campaign in 2013, where he maintained a 2.32 ERA.
During his press conference, Beede compared his pitching characteristics to that of Giants pitchers Matt Cain and Ryan Vogelsong:
“I think my personality and my pitching style is similar to guys here in the Giants’ system, like Cain and Vogelsong. I think I pitch very similar to those guys. If I can pitch like them down the road, that would be pretty special.”
Beede also noted similarities with Cardinals starter Michael Wacha or any stock righty who throws 90 to 95 mph.
The contract with the Giants is worth $2.65 million.
Toronto drafted Beede in the first round three years ago when he attended the Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts. He turned down the Blue Jays’ offered to instead go to Vanderbilt.
