Man charged after brawl with deputies

A Larkspur man was charged with battery and additional charges related to a scuffle that injured two sheriff’s deputies outside Marin Superior Court.

The incident happened June 27 at the Marin County Civic Center. Robert Germain Rivard is being held on $100,000 bail. He was scheduled for arraignment Thursday.

Rivard, 23, was spotted behaving erratically in the courthouse. He continued the behavior in the parking area and deputies followed him outside.

Deputies went to detain him for possible drug intoxication or mental health evaluation, sheriff’s Lt. Jamie Scardina told the Marin Independent Journal.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Rivard allegedly resisted violently, Scardina said. Rivard inflicted cuts and scrapes to one deputy and rib cage injuries to another.

Deputies arrested Rivard and had him placed on a mental health hold. The deputy with the rib cage injuries was hospitalized.

Rivard was booked into the county jail after his medical release. He was charged with three felony counts related to resisting the deputies.

Rivard was also charged with two similar misdemeanors, said Deputy District Attorney Kevin O’Hara.
