AT&T PARK — It’s been a rough morning for Giants reliever Sergio Romo.
First, his beloved Mexico were knocked out of the World Cup in heartbreaking fashion.
Then — and much worse — his manager Bruce Bochy announced he’s been removed as the Giants closer after blowing another save last night, his third in five attempts.
Bochy informed reporters before today’s game that Romo will likely be relegated to a set-up role for the time being:
“I talked to Sergio today. I think it’s the right time we tweaked this a little. He’s still going to be part of the mix, but we’re going to back off a little bit and do it by committee.”
Romo blew his fifth save chance of the season last night in 33 appearances on a go ahead, two-run home run to Brandon Phillips in the ninth inning. Romo blew five saves in 65 appearances last season.
Bochy did not announce a steady replacement for the 31-year-old, saying that he will employ a closer by committee, with Jeremy Affeldt and former closer Santiago Casilla as the most likely contributors:
“It’s not a fun time for a manager to tell the closer he’s going to change things a little bit. It’s not what he wanted to hear. He’s a team guy. He’ll help out where we need him. It’s time to lighten his load.”
