Two people were killed in a high-speed pursuit that started in Oakland, continued on the Bay Bridge and ended in a fiery crash in San Francisco this morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
CHP officers spotted a stolen BMW stolen out of San Francisco on northbound Interstate Highway 880 near Seventh Street in Oakland around 3 a.m., Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.
The driver of the BMW led officers on a chase from Oakland at speeds of around 50 mph to westbound Highway 80, he said. The BMW then continued traveling on the Bay Bridge and accelerated at speeds of more than 100 mph after the bridge’s incline, Wilkenfeld said.
The BMW exited at the Fifth Street off-ramp in San Francisco where it crashed into the left wall of the ramp and caught on fire, he said.
A man was ejected from the vehicle and the other occupant was killed in the car, according to Wilkenfeld.
A Sig-alert was issued at 3:19 a.m. and the off-ramp is estimated to reopen around 10 a.m., he said.
