The Giants reached agreement with Cuban outfielder Daniel Carbonell, Giants general manager Brian Sabean announced Monday.
The 23-year-old signed a four-year, $1.4 million major league contract with incentives. Carbonell will receive a $1 million signing bonus and a $100,000 annual salary in the minor leagues, according to CSN Bay Area.
Carbonell’s salary would be $500,000 this season, $525,000 next year, $600,000 in 2016 and $650,000 for 2017 if he advances to the majors.
His salary would be bumped to $1 million in 2016 with 500 or more plate appearances in 2015. The same goes for 2017 with 500 plus appearances at the dish in 2016.
Carbonell played four years for Camaguey in Cuba’s Serie Nacional, hitting .287 with 119 runs, 28 doubles, four triples, nine home runs and 70 RBIs in 190 games.
He batted .298 with 40 runs, 13 doubles, five homers and 28 RBIs in 62 games in his most recent season (2012-13).
Carbonell can play all three outfield positions.
With nagging injuries to Angel Pagan and the inconsistency of new addition Tyler Colvin, Carbonell is a smart addition to the Giants 40-man roster. That roster is now full.
Carbonell lives in Merida, Mexico and will report to the Giants training facility in Arizona once he’s obtained a U.S. work visa.
