Oakland retiree bags $1 million Lotto prize

A retired Oakland woman who enjoys buying Scratchers tickets is now a millionaire, California Lottery officials said Tuesday.

Maria Moreno, 64, bought a Scratchers ticket at A&A Corner Grocery at 2520 Foothill Blvd. in Oakland, where she won $1 million, lottery officials said.

According to lottery officials, she was with her brother when she scratched the winning ticket and exclaimed:

“I win! I win! I win!”

Lottery officials said when Moreno’s brother asked how much she won, she said:

“I don’t know but there are a lot of zeroes!”

Moreno works part-time and is an active member of her church. With her winnings, she plans to pay off her house, set aside money for her granddaughter’s education and travel to Portugal, according to lottery officials.

The grocery store will receive $5,000 for selling the prize-winning ticket, lottery officials said.
