Police: DUI suspect kills mom, injures child

A Vallejo woman was killed and her 8-year-old daughter was injured when a suspected drunk driver struck their vehicle head-on in Petaluma on Saturday night, police said.

Petaluma police said a 65-year-old Vallejo woman driving a silver 1994 Toyota Camry was killed when a gold 2005 Lincoln driven by 25-year-old Petaluma resident Jesse Martin Cockrill struck her vehicle around 10:07 p.m. on Lakeview Highway, police said.

The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. Her name has not yet been released pending notification of her family, Petaluma police said.

The 8-year-old daughter of the woman killed was a passenger in the Toyota during the crash. The young girl remains at a hospital with minor injuries. Her identity is not being released because she is a juvenile, according to police.

Cockrill suffered major injuries and remains hospitalized in critical condition, police said. According to the initial investigation, police said it appears that Cockrill’s vehicle crossed the center double yellow lines on Lakeville Highway between Frates Road and Browns Lane striking the Toyota head-on.

An open container of alcohol was found inside Cockrill’s vehicle and emergency medical personnel reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol coming from Cockrill.

Toxicology results are still pending, police said. Witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Traffic Officer Matt Capitelli at (707) 776-3721.
