Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers have reached an agreement on a deal reportedly worth in excess of $100 million that will keep the 26-year-old in Red and Gold until 2020.
While tight end Vernon Davis skips OTAs under the shadow of a holdout threat, the 49ers have secured their franchise hurler for at least the next six seasons.
The exact details of the contract were not made available, though recent contracts for quarterbacks generally provide a barometer.

Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears signed a seven year deal worth as much as $126 million, with $54 million in guaranteed money and $85 million due in the first five years.
Tony Romo, one of the most-criticised in the game but statistically one of the best in league history, recently signed a six-year deal with an average salary of $18 million per season.
Romo threw for 3,828 yards and 31 touchdowns last year with a low 1.9 interception percentage. He’d also played during Monday Night Football two seasons prior, with cracked ribs and a punctured lung, raising the bar for playing through injuries.
Kaepernick compares well to Romo, statistically, with just shy of 3,200 yards with 21 touchdowns and the same 1.9 percent interception. Minor differences in the numbers could make Kaepernick appear inferior, though he plays in a division that is by far the most demanding for all quarterbacks.
Via team press release, Trent Baalke said:
“Colin’s hard work and dedication have played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization. His work ethic, leadership and on-field production have positively influenced our team, and we look forward to his continued growth in all areas.”
So, if the details being reported are accurate, Kaepernick’s deal is par for the course. But in an offseason with a key player such as Davis threatening a holdout, the move comes at a critical time. The 49ers can now shift their focus to keep the rest of their roster content.
