A San Jose woman pleaded guilty in federal court in San Jose Thursday to attempting to embezzle nearly a quarter of a million dollars from her employer, a San Jose-based engineering firm, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Briana Irene Roy made a plea deal with prosecutors and agreed to pay the company restitution for the improper charges she made on company credit cards through her PayPal account, U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag’s office said.
Roy was charged with one count of wire fraud for making charges on a credit card issued to an executive of her employer, A&D Engineering, and creating false invoices and receipts to cover up the theft.
Despite working as a marketing manager for the Medical Marketing Division of the company, Roy was not authorized to make charges to the credit cards, according to Haag’s office.
Using her PayPal account, she made fraudulent charges on about 80 occasions between March 2010 and February 2013, attempting to gain a total of $247,387.45, according to Haag’s office.
She will pay $197,240.95 in restitution according to her plea deal and faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 when she is sentenced by Judge D. Lowell Jensen on Oct. 23.
Roy is free on $50,000 bond.
